This chapter in Charles’s life concludes the vindictive actions of Tamron and Camron Mueller after Tamron escapes from a mental hospital, where he was being evaluated, and shoots C.W. Charles and Cedric travel to Jacksonville, Florida, where they meet Horatio’s chief aide, Frank Bishop, and three deputy U.S. marshals after Charles’s hotel is robbed. Together, they pursue the thief, but as they approach the cabin, a vicious dog blocks their path—and an unexpected surprise awaits inside the cabin. Charles then decides to tour the West. While in Denver, he is asked to mentor the mayor’s son, who has been disowned by his father. Charles is responsible for guiding the boy away from a life of hate and crime.

Meanwhile, an old adversary arrives in Philadelphia and attacks Charles, leaving his life hanging in the balance.
